Since then Toure has become a legend at the Etihad, helping Man City win the Premier League title twice.
Past glories, however, seem to count for nothing when it comes to Guardiola.
Toure has yet to feature in any of his top-flight matchday squads this season, and now the 33-year-old has been dumped from European action too.
His agent, Dmitri Seluk, insists his 33-year-old client is happy to remain in Manchester until the end of his contract despite the lack of match action.

Seluk: “We are pleased that Yaya was in the team until the end of the contract. Of course, he could leave, but we decided that he would stay.
“Yaya is a great professional. He was show that, in spite of some decisions, the player has to do their job.
“He has won the Premier League twice, and in general everything in the world, except for the World Cup.
“Everyone understands everything. The man has a year on his contract.”
Only eight of the 25 players named by Champions League clubs in their squads must be homegrown.
Due to City’s shortage of English talent they could only name 21 players, which meant Toure was not selected.

Seluk remained upbeat about his client’s omission and says Guardiola will know whether he made the right choice or not come the end of the season.
He told Sport Express in Russia: “This decision was made by an ingenious modern manager, Guardiola.
“Yaya is a professional. Perhaps Pep took into account the fact that his contract ends in a year, and wants to give other players a chance to work on themselves.
“This is the vision of the coach. And life will show whether it is the correct decision or not. We will see at the end of the season.”
