Wimbledon 2017: Venus Williams beats Ana Konjuh 6-3, 6-2 to be oldest quarter-finalist since 1994

VENUS WILLIAMS defied the years to become the oldest Wimbledon quarter-finalist since Martina Navratilova back in 1994.

The veteran 37-year-old blasted teenager Ana Konjuh off Centre Court in just 63 minutes.

Croatian rookie Konjuh wasn’t even born when Venus made her first appearance at Wimbledon and was only two years-old when the American won her first Grand Slam title here.

Yet the gulf in class proved as wide as the age gap as Venus booked a quarter-final clash with French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko.

That will be her 100th match at Wimbledon and few will have been more straightforward than this 6-3, 6-2 victory.

With Billie Jean King watching from the Royal Box, Williams delivered a tennis master class to leave 19-year-old Konjuh chasing shadows.

The number ten seed is the only previous winner remaining in this year’s tournament, although the last of her five titles at the All-England Club came back in 2008.

The match was played out in front of an unusually subdued Centre Court crowd, who were clearly keen to see Williams through as quickly as possible.

And the five-time former winner did not disappoint, despatching the number 27 seed with the minimum of fuss to leave the stage clear for Andy Murray.

Venus, the No10 seed, is the only previous winner remaining in this year’s tournament, although the last of her five titles at the All-England Club came back in 2008.
