Wayne Rooney set to miss out on Manchester United starting berth through back injury…but can still haul around his own bags

WAYNE ROONEY doesn’t appear to be showing signs of the back problem which troubled him earlier this week – but Jose Mourinho is still set to start him on the bench.

The Manchester United skipper, 30, will likely miss out on the starting line-up for the second game running when Zorya visit Old Trafford.

And despite Mourinho claiming Roo was suffering from a niggling back injury earlier in the week, he was quite able to haul his own luggage up the steps when arriving at the Lowry Hotel ahead of the game.

Jose said: “[Rooney] has had a back problem, so has not managed to train at full intensity all week. He is recovered now, but only just returning to training with the rest of the players.

“At the start of the week I was completely convinced he would play the whole game, but now I am not so sure.”

The England captain has struggled for form since before the Euros and has failed to shine despite being pushed into a deeper role behind United’s new-look strike force.

He looked in good spirits as he arrived with the rest of the team to the plush, five-star Manchester digs, joking and laughing with photographers as he hauled his luggage up the steps.

Mourinho is most likely to stick with Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the visit of the Ukrainians.

He has reiterated that it is a must win game after the shock defeat to Feyenoord in the opener.

Mourinho revealed: "From now on the approach will be different, I will be putting more of my key players on the pitch.

"It is very important that we win.”
