The 160km stage, from Bourg-en Brisse to Culoz featured six climbs through the Jura mountains, including a 12.8km slog up Grand Colombier, was won by Colombian Jarlinson Pantano with his maiden Grand Tour stage win.

Pantono outsprinted Pole Rafal Majka as the last remnants of a 30-man breakaway raced for the finishing line.

But defending champion Froome was so comfortable he had time for what looked like a casual chat with teammate Wout Poels as the chasing pack filed in.

And there were no changes in the top five of the yellow jersey race with Froome keeping his 1min 47secs lead over Bauke Mollema, with Adam Yates 2mins 45secs behind and Nairo Quintana at +2mins 59secs.

Tejay van Garderen’s struggle at the end saw him drop from sixth to eighth – Romain Bardet and Richie Porte have leapfrogged above him.

The biggest winner in the overall race  was Sebastien Reichenbach, who finished fourth, six seconds off the winner and three minutes ahead of the yellow jersey group.

That moves him to around eight minutes off Froome.
