Tottenham set to trigger Erik Lamela contract extension clause to keep Argentine until 2020

TOTTENHAM appear set to trigger Erik Lamela’s contract extension clause to keep the Argentine in North London until at least 2020.

Mauricio Pochettino looks keen to activate the additional year on the forward’s current deal after he returned from his year-long injury strongly, say the Independent.

Since returning from his persistent hip knock, Lamela has started ten games and made a further 18 appearances off the bench.

The former Roma winger, 26, has impressed Pochettino since being gently reintegrated to the first-team.

Lamela returned to the fold in November and has gone on to score twice in his 28 appearances in all competitions since.

Despite a lack of goals, Pochettino is keen to see Lamela stay around at least for another two years to allow the Argentine to prove he deserves a chance.

The forward has endured a rocky few years in North London – making just 14 appearances last season as he struggled with his hip injury.

Spurs signed Lamela for £27million in 2013, with the star penning a four-year deal – with two additional option years.

In recent seasons, there has been serious interest in Lamela from top clubs in Europe, including Italy and Spain.

However, both the club and Lamela are keen to keep their relationship going as they head into their first season at their new stadium.
