Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is a big admirer of Gibson, who received his first England call-up as a late replacement for Chris Smalling against Lithuania last month.

The Blues hope Gibson will move south and head to west London, as Conte looks to add defensive options next summer with the possible departure of skipper John Terry.

Boro value Gibson at £25million, but chairman Steve Gibson will be torn at the prospect of keeping his nephew or allowing him to kick on with his career in the top flight.
