Swansea dealt huge blow as Alfie Mawson is ruled out of Sheffield Wednesday FA Cup clash after injuring knee in warm-up

SWANSEA CITY have been dealt a huge injury as star defender Alfie Mawson was injured in the pre-match warm-up.

The Englishman, 24, looked in a lot of pain as medical staff tended to his knee ahead of the FA Cup fifth round clash at Sheffield Wednesday.

But the centre-back was deemed unfit to play and had to be replaced in the line-up by Kyle Naughton, with Carlos Carvalhal experimenting with a back three.

Mawson was later seen sitting on the bench with a knee brace.

The Reading and Brentford trainee has been a key player for the Swans this season, starting every Premier League game so far this season, missing just one match in all competitions.

He has excelled since the appointment of Carlos Carvalhal, helping the club climb out of the relegation zone after looking dead and buried under Paul Clement.

Mawson scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against Liverpool and provided an assist in the 3-1 win over Arsenal a week later.

It is far too early to speculate on the severity of the injury, with Swansea yet to make any announcement.
