Sunderland’s Paddy McNair reveals he forced move from Manchester United after refusing to go on loan
PADDY MCNAIR has revealed how he issued Jose Mourinho with an ultimatum to force a move away from Manchester United.
The Northern Ireland international left Old Trafford last summer to join Sunderland after coming through the youth ranks with the Red Devils.

Having broken onto the scene in the United first-team as a teenager in September 2014, he went on to make 18 appearances in an impressive breakthrough campaign.

However, last season he only featured nine times, and he was determined to leave for regular Premier League football despite the pleas to go out on loan instead by the newly-appointed Mourinho.
McNair, 21, told BBC Sport: “He wanted me to go on loan and I went in to see Jose and just said ‘look, if you don’t let me go on a permanent, I’m just going to stay here’.
“That’s how strongly I thought about it. At the time, it’s what I wanted so I’ve got no regrets.”

After telling the Portuguese coach that he would refuse any temporary move, he eventually secured a £5.5million transfer to Sunderland.
And despite his stern stance with Mourinho, McNair believes that the United boss admired him for his decision.
He added: “I think he quite liked how I was straight up. I said I wanted to leave, that I didn’t want to go on loan.

“I think he respected that. I told him that I’d been here since I was 12-years-old and club could at least let me do what I want to do.
“I spoke to Ed Woodward and said the same to him. I was refusing to go on loan basically. I just wanted a new challenge and off I went.”
Unfortunately for McNair his season was cruelly cut-short by a cruciate knee ligament injury after playing just 12 times for the Black Cats.
