Stubborn referee refuses to abandon non-league game despite blizzard conditions

A STUBBORN referee officiating a Welsh League Division Two clash refused to call off a game despite a blizzard taking place.

When Aberdare hosted Risca at Aberaman Park on Friday night heavy snowfall fell during their game.

But that did not stop both sides from braving the cold conditions and playing the full 90 minutes, with Aberdare winning 4-2.

Speaking about the conditions, Aberdare Town treasurer Steve Pearce told Walesonline: “It was one of them where the players didn’t complain and the referee was happy to let it go on, so it did.

“There was a couple of tasty challenges at one point and I thought the referee would call it off but it was alright to be honest.”

Pearson explained the biggest worry wasn’t the conditions but whether the teams could possibly play with a white ball.

He said: “We haven’t got any orange balls so we tried a blue ball at one point but that was worse.

“We’ll have to invest in some orange ones soon!”

He added:”A lot of the boys were wearing short-sleeves. They had undershirts to go underneath their shirts, but they were different colours to our kit so they are not allowed to wear them!”
