Ceballos, 20, is already a key member of the Real Betis side – making 30 league appearances last summer, scoring two and getting two assists.

Club chiefs have offered to make him their highest paid player and promised to bring in new talent to play alongside him.

But Los Blancos boss Zidane is desperate to secure his services, while new Barca chief Ernesto Valverde is also an admirer.

Madrid were confident they had sealed a £12million deal but Ceballos’ reservations over his squad role saw their Catalan rivals enter the race.

It is believed Zidane was considering shipping the player straight out on loan to another La Liga side, while Barca are understood to have offered the player first-team football.

But, according to Marca, Ceballos would prefer to join Real, if they can give him different assurances.

Zidane hopes to seal a deal before his side begin their pre-season tour to the USA.
