The 76-year-old even asked family by his bedside what the Doncaster Rovers result was, the team who son Darren manages.

And he seemed in good spirits as he quipped he was fighting to be ready to fly to Kiev to watch Liverpool face Real Madrid in a fortnight.

But Fergie did admit his recovery would mean missing the FA Cup final between United and Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday week.

He told family: “Aye, the Cup Final is out, but what about Kiev?”

Fergie’s wife Cathy and their sons Darren, Jason and Mark have been at his bedside.

They are said to be “pleased and extremely encouraged” by his progress.

Goodwill messages from the biggest names in football flooded in after it was revealed Sir Alex had needed an emergency operation.
