Rio Olympics 2016: Paddy Barnes suffers shock split-decision defeat in light-flyweight boxing to Spain’s Samuel Carmona

PADDY BARNES suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the light-flyweight boxing.

Ireland’s Barnes has made a name for himself at the Rio Olympics by posting a series of tweets of himself with sports stars – including one with Caroline Wozniacki which poked fun at her ex Rory McIlroy.

But Barnes failed to have the last laugh in Rio after losing out in a controversial split-decision defeat to Spain’s Samuel Carmona.

It was level pegging going into the third and final round of the bout when Barnes got clocked by a brutal right hook from Carmona.

It appeared cut the eye of the 29-year-old – who won bronze medals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 – and he ended up on the wrong end of a shock decision.

Barnes has caught the eye on social media by posting a series of cheeky tweets since he arrived in Rio.

The first was with cycling star Mark Cavendish, while he also grabbed a selfie with golfer Ricky Fowler and tennis ace Serena Williams.

But it was the Belfast man’s tweet with Wozniacki which gained most attention.

Barnes posted: “Hey @CaroWozniacki I think we make a great couple, what ya think @McIlroyRory.”

But McIlroy appeared to see the funny side as when he messaged back the two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

McIlroy replied: “@paddyb_ireland @mickconlan11 good luck lads! If your boxing is as good as your tweeting it should be 2 guaranteed golds!!”

McIlroy was due to compete for Ireland at the Olympics but pulled out over Zika fears, alongside a number of other high-profile golf stars.
