Republic of Ireland hard man Roy Keane reduced to tears after his side qualify for knock-out stages of Euro 2016 with Italy win

ROY KEANE, Republic of Ireland’s hard man assistant manager, was reduced to tears by his side’s Euro 2016 heroics on Wednesday night.

The former Manchester United warrior watched his side beat widely fancied Italy 1-0 to reach the last 16 and was overcome with emotion as he cuddled players and boss Martin O’Neill.

Midfielder James McLean could not believe so many men from the Emerald Isle were letting their hearts of stone melt as they wept openly in France after the amazing win, thanks to Robbie Brady’s header.

The West Brom man said: “You can’t put it into words.

“You look at the scenes and you hear it all. The passion and grown men crying.

“Complete love for our country and hopefully we can go even further. It’s quite remarkable.

“It was a great Italian side but we knew it was win or bust – that we could go home – and we gave it everything.

“We left nothing on the field and it’s hands down the best day in my football career.”

Keane was his war-mongering best before the match, telling his players to take the Italians into the trenches and do whatever it takes to get the win.

But he was far less confrontational after the event with warm embraces all round from the man who ran Old Trafford with an iron fist.

Match winner Brady added: "What a moment for everyone involved.

"We said today that we were going to do a job for all the people that had come out here and we did it.

"We made history, into the last-16 and we go again.

"I am lost for words, over the moon, emotional. You have a look at what it means to everyone around – me included.

"I grew up waiting and dreaming to play at this stage and to go and do it in front of my family is the best feeling in the world."
