Referee forced to count out steps after groundsman forgets to paint on penalty spot due to heavy snow during Cologne clash with Freiburg

FREIBURG heroically came back from 3-0 down to beat Cologne 4-3 on Sunday.

But trouble came for the referee when he was forced to find the penalty spot underneath mounds of snow.

After Lukas Klunter’s early opener, Stefan Ruthenbeck’s side were awarded a penalty after 16 minutes.

But due to the snowy conditions, the groundsman had forgot to paint the penalty spot on at the RheinEnergieStadion.

The referee was forced to use his initiative and count out the steps to estimate the right distance.

A makeshift penalty spot did not phase Sehrou Guirassy, who struck home the set piece to double the home side’s tally.

American midfielder Caleb Stanko then put the ball into his own net to make it three for the home side.

But Nils Petersen and Janik Haberer snatched two back for the visitors, before they magically scored two penalties in stoppage time.

Ruthenbeck’s men are yet to secure a league win and remain at the bottom of the pile in the Bundesliga.

After pulling off the comeback of the season, Freiburg sit at the sixteenth in the table.

And Cologne will have to put the defeat behind them ahead of Wednesday’s crunch clash against Bayern Munich.
