MANCHESTER UNITED have made Paul Pogba the highest paid French sportsman in the world – despite the fact he can’t get a game.
The £89million midfielder is the first footballer to top the list – compiled by L’Equipe – since 2012 when Karim Benzema was coining it in.
Tony Parker – the French basketballer playing for San Antonio Spurs – topped the list for four straight years before United blew open the war chest to lure Pogba to Old Trafford.
The list tots up wages as well as sponsorship deals and partnerships and Pogba has now blown his rivals out of the water.
The £290,000-a-week wages he gets – for sitting on the bench most recently – are supplemented with lucrative deals with brands like Adidas.
Pogba’s move from Juventus to Old Trafford helped him jump instantly from 8th to 2nd but additional deals have not made him No1.
Even flirting with Man United did not earn Antoine Griezmann enough of a pay rise at Atletico Madrid to get him in the top two.
Big summer transfers Ousmane Dembele (Dortmund to Barcelona) and Kylian Mbappe (Monaco to PSG) and their massive new salaries have taken them up to 10th and 11th respectively.
HAIR RAISER Tahith Chong is the Manchester United wonderkid with hair bigger than Marouane Fellaini and skills to match
Real Madrid star Benzema has dropped down to 5th and Bayern Munich man Franck Ribery is down at nine.
Manchester City’s record-breaking deal for Aymeric Laporte has taken the French defender up to 12th.
