Following recent reports in the media indicating unrest within the Godolphin operation, Ferguson described his position as “untenable” and stepped down on Tuesday, ending a long-standing association with Sheikh Mohammed.

Appleby shares Godolphin training duties in Newmarket with Saeed bin Suroor, whose relationship with Ferguson was reported to have broken down.

Appleby, who won the Coral-Eclipse with Hawkbill in the royal blue colours last season, said: “John made his decision and he felt it was the right decision. I can only thank him for the help he has given me over the years. He has been a pleasure to work with.

“I am employed by Godolphin to train horses to the best of my ability with the team that I have, and that is what I will carry on doing.

“I’m not going to get involved in anything else, it’s not my department. My department is the horses, and as I said to William (Buick), his department is to ride them. As long as we are doing the best at that, hopefully we will keep on getting the results.”

Joe Osborne, current managing director of Godolphin in Ireland, has taken up the position of interim chief executive of Godolphin’s global operation.

Appleby added: “Joe was around the other day and just introduced himself. I’ve known Joe for many years and for the sake of his position we just need to let him know what we are doing and work our way from there.”
