Newcastle news: Under-23s boss Peter Beardsley suspended by club as racism and bullying investigation continues

PETER BEARDSLEY has been suspended by Newcastle – but has issued a furious denial of the allegations of racism and bullying against him.

The Toon Under-23s boss is being investigated following multiple complaints about his conduct from his own players.

Beardsley, 56, arrived to take training as normal yesterday morning at the club’s academy.

But he was soon summoned to a meeting with Newcastle’s managing director Lee Charnley at St James’ Park, having also attended an internal hearing the previous day.

And the former England and Magpies forward left the ground before midday after being told he would no longer be in charge of the Under-23s while the club’s investigation was ongoing.

A Newcastle statement read: “After discussions with Peter Beardsley this morning it has been agreed that he will take a period of leave, to commence immediately, while the club conducts its investigation into allegations made against him.

“It would be inappropriate for the club to comment further until the conclusion of this investigation.”

Newcastle are planning to speak to academy players throughout this week and hope to complete their investigation soon, with Beardsley expected to be sacked if the allegations are proven.

But a statement released by Beardsley’s lawyers said: “Peter is aware of inaccurate media reports which result from unauthorised leaks.

“Allegations of unfair treatment have been made, which are currently being investigated.

“Peter categorically denies the allegations. It is hoped the investigation will conclude quickly.

“Peter will not be making any further comment at the present time and until investigations conclude.

“Peter respectfully requests that his privacy and that of his family is respected.”

Newcastle youngster Yasin Ben El-Mhanni, 22, has accused Beardsley of bullying and has a grievance meeting scheduled for Thursday.

Several of the winger’s team-mates have supported his claim and others have accused their coach of racist abuse.

One of the incidents was alleged to have happened during a team trip to the Go Ape adventure course.

After seeing two African players struggling on a climbing frame, Beardsley allegedly said: “Why are you taking so long? Your lot should be good at this.”

He has also been accused of questioning the age of African players.

Beardsley is an unpopular figure at the academy and insiders report a culture of negativity which has been going on for years.

SunSport has heard complaints of how Beardsley would belittle players at training and on the touchline during matches.

One source said: “If you are not one of his favourites, he treats you like s***.

“But if you stand up to him and have a go back, you get frozen out.”

Other players who are unhappy with Beardsley’s conduct have been too afraid to speak out because they fear it might affect their career – given the power the Toon legend still wields.

Beardsley, who is in his second stint as a coach at Newcastle, is known to be an ally of owner Mike Ashley, having worked for him as a club ambassador at one stage.
