The winner will be handed a one-year contract to play a major role in the testing stage of development.

McLaren believe they can harness the expertise of gaming stars to help develop their car as they struggle for reliability and performance with their Honda engine.

The team’s executive director Zak Brown said: “This is for real – we absolutely require additional support across our two simulator platforms.”

They are searching for virtual racers across a variety of gaming platforms, and the team want gamers to also show they have “engineering know-how, teamwork and the necessary mental and physical strengths.”

In an effort to narrow down the finalists, four will be chosen from qualifying events online with a further six international finalists chosen by gaming and F1 experts.

Brown insists the initiative is not a stunt, and said the winner would “genuinely be part of the McLaren team.”

The esports industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in international sport, with millions of online viewers tuning in to watch events.
