And Pochettino believes that strike will prove to be a turning point for the £17million striker after a slow start.

He said: “I told you that in the last months he stepped up and started to work better.

“I was happy in the way his performances were on the training ground.

“In football you need to be ready when you have an opportunity to show you’re quality.

“It’s a problem when the player is not ready for different reasons.

“Now it’s a different case Janssen is working very hard he has a great opportunity to score and he scored – [and] a Son hat-trick – we are very happy.”

Kane is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after going off early in the game with an ankle injury.

Pochettino chose to move Heung-min Son up top and bring on Christian Eriksen, leaving Janssen on the bench.

But after coming on later in the game, Janssen swept home a cross from hat-trick-hero Son - his first strike not from a set-piece in 30 games for Spurs.

His goal - Tottenham's fifth - was wildly cheered in the stands and saw the Dutchman, 22, mobbed by his team-mates.

And with Spurs lacking options up front, Poch will be desperate for his summer signing to start showing the kind of form that saw him top the Dutch scoring charts last season.
