Alonso was not believed to have had any difficulties with injury before the match and the news will come as a setback to the league leaders.

Antonio Conte is already without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who didn’t travel up to Manchester after suffering an ankle injury.

Asmir Begovic starts in the Belgian’s place with goalkeeper Eduardo promoted to the bench.

Man United has made a number of changes themselves, but most were not enforced through injury.

Red Devils fans were already in despair after it was announced that Juan Mata was out for the season.

And they were even more disappointed to find out Zlatan Ibrahimovic had been dropped and Ashley Young made captain.
