Manchester United will earn more TV money than Man City this season – despite Pep Guardiola’s side enjoying record breaking year

MANCHESTER UNITED are likely to collect more Premier League television money than Manchester City this season – despite being blown away on the field.

City have dazzled all before them in a record-breaking campaign which has seen Pep Guardiola’s side cruise to the title.

They could even become the first club to record 100 points for a Premier League season if they beat relegation-threatened Southampton in the final game of the year.

But despite United being criticised for serving up dull football throughout the campaign, TV bosses have screened their matches live more than any other club.

And that means when it comes to sharing out the pot of money served up by Sky Sports and BT Sport, it is the Old Trafford club who are set to land the biggest chunk.

Research by the Mail suggests United stand to make at total of £149.9m from the domestic rights package for 2019-19.

That is £1.5m more than champions City will get, even though they will make slightly more money than their rivals on payments for league position.

The gap is down to the fact United will make £32.9m in live TV fees compared to City’s income of £29.48m.

Only Arsenal, a club often in crisis throughout much of Arsene Wenger’s final season, have been live the same amount of times as United – 28 over the year.

The popularity of sides among TV bosses clearly has no relation to the performances of teams throughout the season.

For Burnley may have enjoyed a brilliant campaign to secure Europa League football, but no team appeared in fewer live games than Sean Dyche’s team.

Their seven appearances is two less than West Brom and Huddersfield made – and means the Clarets pulled in a comparatively paltry £12.8m in live fees.

Under the terms of the current domestic broadcasting deals, all 20 Premier League clubs receive an equal share of £79.15, with the remainder split up depending on appearances and finishing position.

It means the final weekend could be worth as much as £5m to some clubs depending on whether they win or lose and how it affects their final position in the table.
