The Portugal centre-back was furious over the summer that Saints dismissed a £9million bid from Everton without even informing him.

Mourinho is keen on a move for his compatriot, who is seen as a cheaper alternative to Van Dijk in the Red Devils boss’ quest to add some solidity to his leaking back-line.

Swedish centre-back Lindelof plays for Fonte’s former club Benfica and has become United’s first-choice defensive target in recent weeks.

Lindelof has a £25m break clause in his contract, but it does not kick in until the summer and United are reluctant to splash out £50m on him.

Lindelof is also a January target for Chelsea , with Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan keeping a close eye on him.

Summer signing Eric Bailly has been the only man to really impress in United’s defence so far this season.

Mourinho loves a clean sheet more than anyone, but has seen them hard to come by with United conceding 16 times in their opening Prem 14 games.

Fans have been unimpressed with Argentinian Marcos Rojo, who was lucky to avoid a red card during United’s 1-1 draw at Everton.
