Website ClubCall say Mendes, who is agent to Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo, is also in town to broker the deal.
Old Trafford scouts have been to the Primeira Liga to watch Lindelof this season.
However, it is thought the transfer fee remains a sticky point between the two parties and will require some ironing out before Lindelof is a United player.
Mourinho initially offered £34m with the rest of the fee in bonuses but is not clear whether the Benfica bigwig will accept.
