Manchester United team news: Wayne Rooney spectacularly dropped by Jose Mourinho for Leicester showdown

WAYNE ROONEY has been incredibly dropped for Manchester United’s clash with Leicester.

The United skipper, 30, has had a torrid time of things so far this season – and Jose Mourinho has finally said enough is enough.

Roo – England’s all-time leading scorer – will have to make do with a place on the bench, and while the news was expected, it’s still a somewhat surprisingly bold move from the Special One.

Going into Wednesday night’s 3-1 win over Northampton in the EFL Cup, United had lost three games in a row – the first time Jose had succumbed to that fate since 2006, during his first stint with Chelsea.

He’ll be hoping the swing of the axe will be just the boost his side needs to get back on track in the Premier League.

Ander Herrera and Daley Blind will line-up in central midfield alongside Paul Pogba, while Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will lead the line at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Anthony Martial will miss the game after getting injured during the 3-1 defeat against Watford.

The Frenchman was flattened in the build-up to the Hornets’ first goal after taking a blow to the head earlier in the game.

Confirming the news, Mourinho said: “Martial is not available. You are wrong because you say concussion."

Mourinho has been in the news a lot recently after comments he reportedly made threatening to break Arsene Wenger's face.

But the Special One did not address claims made in a new book - choosing instead to focus on the game.

He had another pop and the pundits and players who have had a go at him once again labelling them ‘Einsteins.’

He added: "The Einsteins need money to live, they can't coach, they can't sit on the bench, they can't win matches.

"They can speak, they can write, they can criticise the work of other people, but I am a good man. I am good man of goodwill. I do lots of charity, I help so many people, so why not also feed the Einsteins? That's fine."
