United made an opening bid of £65m as they see Morata as a bit-part player who completed just five La Liga matches last season, subbed on 12 times and subbed off in nine of his 14 starts.
But Madrid reckon the 15 league goals he scored – despite being behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema in the pecking order – make him worth £90m.
According to insiders, Real president Florentino Perez has told United chiefs that their willingness to pay £100m for Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann has set the bar for negotiations.
