Manchester United offered last-gasp chance to bag Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred under noses of Manchester City

MANCHESTER UNITED have been given an eleventh hour chance to bag Shakhtar Donetsk star Fred.

Manchester City looked to have cooled their interest in the Brazilian after two bids were rejected this month.

However, Pep Guardiola looks to have turned his attention to signing a winger following the injury to Leroy Sane, leaving it too late to sign Fred before 11pm today.

Fred, 24, is regarded as a long-term successor to 32-year-old Fernandinho by Guardiola and City are confident of concluding a deal in the summer.

Mourinho has revealed his summer recruitment plans will focus on landing a midfield replacement for Michael Carrick, who retires at the end of the season.

But Pep’s decision to put talks on hold has provided an opening for the United boss, who could even push for a Deadline Day coup.
