The 71-capped Norwegian international, who played for Middlesbrough and Barnsley in the top-flight, revealed on his Twitter account that the Red Devils are in pole position to get Mkhitaryan ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea.

And it appears that Mkhitaryan also has the same agent as Zlatan Ibrahimovic – that could lead to him following the Swedish superstar, who has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old former Shakhtar Donetsk man scored 20 goals for the Bundesliga club last season and only has one year left on his current contract.

He rejected a new £6.4million offer to stay on.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was hoping to secure the services of the £25million-rated Mkhitaryan – but that might be hard work with United for competition.

Juventus are also keen on Mkhitaryan, as is Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp who signed him from Shakhtar Donestsk for £23.5million almost three years ago.
