But Old Trafford chief Mourinho has targeted City’s striker because Aguero, 28, is viewed as surplus to requirements under Pep Guardiola.
Aguero knows he is now second choice to Gabriel Jesus at the Etihad but it is understood to wants to stay in Manchester.
And Mourinho is aware the Argentine, who would cost in the region of £55million, is a proven Premier League hotshot.
Since his debut for City in August 2011, Aguero has scored a phenomenal 120 league goals in just 178 appearances.

United’s interest will evoke memories of Carlos Tevez’s controversial switch from United to City in 2009.
Ibra underwent his op in Pittsburgh last week and claimed he was ‘stronger’ following the successful surgery.
His agent Mino Raiola issued a statement to reiterate the 35-year-old Swede would not retire.
But Mourinho, who also wants Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann — who has an £89m buy-out clause — has opted to press ahead with other targets rather than waiting for Ibrahimovic.
