Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho in stands to watch Scott McTominay make Scotland debut against Costa Rica

But the Red Devils midfielder was unable to inspire Alex McLeish’s men to victory as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at Hampden Park.

Mourinho sat alongside former Cardiff boss Malky Mackay in Glasgow, as McLeish’s start of his second spell in charge of the Tartan Army ended in defeat.

Starting alongside Fulham duo Tom Cairney and Kevin McDonald and Newcastle ace Matt Ritchie, McTominay lasted 58 minutes before he was hauled off.

He and Cairney were replaced by Celtic duo Callum McGregor and Stuart Armstrong, but Oscar Ramirez’s side held on for the win.

After an uninspiring display, the 21-year-old will be looking to prove his worth to his international team-mates when Scotland face Hungary on Tuesday evening.

And the ex-Birmingham manager will be demanding a better performance after they were outplayed by Costa Rica.

The 32-year-old pulled the ball back for Marco Urena in the 14th minute, who in turn dispatched low into the far corner beyond the outstretched arms of Allan McGregor.

It was to be the only goal of the game as Scotland suffer back-to-back home losses for the first time since September 2013.
