Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho admits he has ‘bad feelings’ over failing to give his fringe players a fair crack of the whip

JOSE MOURINHO confessed he has “bad feelings” about failing to give some Manchester United stars a fair crack of the whip.

A number of players, including Memphis Depay and Ashley Young, have had little time on the pitch this season.

United manager Mourinho claims he has too many players in some positions to give everyone a chance.

Depay has made just ten appearances and Young only nine.

The Special One admitted:  “I still have some bad feelings towards myself because I didn’t give everyone a real chance.

“There are some positions in our squad here where we have overbookings.

“In the attacking wing positions — not just pure wingers but also others who can play there — we have added Rashford and Rooney to Lingard, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Martial, Memphis and Young.

“So I didn’t really give people like Young and Memphis a run of matches to play, so I have a little bit of a bad feeling.”

However, two players who did get a chance because of injuries are Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones, who have formed a fine central defensive partnership since the start of last month.

Centre-half Eric Bailly might be back in training after injury but that does not guarantee him a place for the Boxing Day fixture at home to Sunderland.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Mourinho added: “In relation to Rojo and Jones, the injury situation opened the door for them in a position where we don’t have many. The way they were working in training gave them the condition to start games immediately.

“Their first game together was Swansea away and we won. We played well, they were stable and they built from that.

“I’m really pleased with both — Marcus because many considered him to lack the quality of a Manchester United player and Phil because he is without the injuries of the past and is back to the good Phil Jones.”

The Portuguese added: “I like my squad and I want to keep my squad.

“I believe more in the summer market than in the winter transfer window.

“Let’s see what happens. If we open the door for somebody to leave it is not because we push him, it is because somebody really wants to leave.”
