Man City in pole position to sign Jorginho after Napoli star’s agent dismisses Manchester United offer

MANCHESTER CITY are in pole position to sign Jorginho after his agent ruled out an approach from neighbours United.

Reports claimed the Red Devils had met with the Napoli midfielder’s representative Joao Santos over a move.

But Santos told Radio Crc: “Jorginho has done very well with Napoli, he plays for the Italian national team, he is unique in his characteristics and for those reasons he’s probably being followed by many teams.

“At the moment though there are a lot of rumours flying about. The Napoli coach and players are being approached by first one team then another, but there’s nothing official.

“The last thing I read is that Manchester United made a proposal through Jose Mourinho’s representative [Jorge Mendes], but no-one called me.

“At the moment, given the two-year contract with Napoli, the last word is up to De Laurentiis [Napoli’s president].”

Jorginho, 26, has indicated he favours a move to City over their Premier League rivals.

Both clubs have been watching Napoli’s Italy international as they look for midfield reinforcements.

Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal are also said to be interested in the player, who The Times claim will cost £53milllion.

Santos insists no official offer has been made yet but ruled out the prospect of Jorginho joining a Serie A rival.

He said: “Everyone asks for information, but nobody has made any official offers so I can’t say which track is hotter.

“I’ve already been to all the English clubs because that’s my job, I get information.

“If he were to leave Napoli I can say that Jorginho wouldn’t play for any other [Serie A] team, even if he didn’t have any release clause.”

Jorginho has scored three goals this season but his strength lies in linking the play between defence and attack.

He won the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2014.
