The couple bought sprawling Hurtmore House in Godalming, which has a cinema, football pitch and helipad, soon after their 2006 wedding for £3.5million.

They paid £500,000 above the asking price and spent a further £5million doing it up.

Ashley, who now plays for LA Galaxy in the US, had originally given the country pile a price tag of £7.5million.

But a source close to the footballer, who welcomed his second child with girlfriend Sharon Canu last month, said: “Ashley had to take a substantial cut as he realised he just needed to get rid of it.”

Meanwhile, Cheryl spoke about Hurtmore House in her 2012 autobiography, Cheryl: My Story, and said she found it hard moving out when her marriage ended.

She said: “It was heartbreaking packing up my clothes and still seeing some of Ashley’s in the wardrobe.

“Every room held a memory and I cried every night.”

Cheryl handed the house over to Ashley when they divorced.
