Liverpool transfer news: Jurgen Klopp to rival Marseille for Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi

LIVERPOOL are set to rival Marseille in the race to sign Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi.

According to Get Football News France, the French club’s Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta, who used to perform the same role at Barcelona, has made the 22-year-old his top January priority.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side would be expected to beat Marseille to Amavi’s signature if they decide to make their interest concrete.

Foot Mercato claim the France Under-21 star is only willing to move in January if a Premier League club makes him an offer.

He became an instant fans’ favourite at Aston Villa despite being part of one of their worst squads in living memory.

Villa finished bottom of the league with just 17 points last season, although Amavi sat out most of the campaign after rupturing his cruciate ligaments in November.

But the £10m signing has been much improved in this season's Championship campaign, starring in Steve Bruce's side's push up the table.

It will seem strange to some to see the Premier League's second best team chasing a player from a side who got relegated last season and now lie 13th in the second tier, but Liverpool's leaky defence is in desperate need of a new left-back.

So far this season, Jurgen Klopp has opted to play midfielder James Milner in the position over the erratic Alberto Moreno.

Ahead of their clash with Stoke, Liverpool showed up rivals Manchester United by offering the press a host of Christmas treats.
