Many expected Harry Kane to step up and fire a shot on goal.
But instead, it was Manchester City right back Kyle Walker.
Walker didn’t trouble the target, and that led to quite a reaction Twitter.
One social media user commented: “I expect Southgate’s resignation at half time purely for allowing Kyle Walker to take a free-kick.”
Another Twitter post read: “First Harry Kane then Kyle Walker taking the free kick, who’s next – Joe Hart?!”
There were thousands of empty seats at the home of football for the World Cup qualifier.
