The referee gave the spot-kick, which was subsequently scored by Daniele De Rossi — but the Dutchman has received a retrospective two-match ban for the act.

A statement read: “The player, Strootman, after moving the ball with his foot, has then turned his body in an unnatural way which led to him falling to the ground, which was in no way initiated by action of Lazio player, Wallace.

“This fulfils completely the criteria for the application of article 35, 1.3, for unsporting behaviour, being as it was seriously unsporting behaviour, clearly not seen by the referee, and in particular an evident simulation from which a penalty was awarded.

“Kevin Strootman will face a two-match suspension.

And the suspension is particularly damaging to second place-chasing, Roma, who will be without the midfielder for clashes against AC Milan and Juventus.

Meanwhile, a court ruling has deemed the Italian capital side will NOT face any charges for reported racist chanting from fans towards Lazio star, Balde Keita.

This incident occurred on the same weekend Sulley Muntari was told his suspension will be helped after walking off the pitch following racist abuse from the terraces.
