And the defender who moved to the Allianz Arena from Manchester City in 2011 spoke to the Bavarian giants top brass before deciding to stay on.

Boateng told Kicker: “I had a conversation with the directors about how they see me in the summer, I said I was thinking about it (a move away).”

The defender went on to discuss why he failed to start high profile games under sacked boss Carlo Ancelotti.

He added: “Maybe because I played not that much with him as coach, he saw me less too because of my injuries.”

Jupp Heynckes has returned to steady the Bavarian ship until the end of the season in his fourth stint in charge.

Bayern Munich battered Freiburg 5-0 on Saturday and Boateng was full of praise for the experienced coach.

Boateng said: “His attitude is that he wants to give something back to Bayern and that is very positive for us as a team.

“There are not many managers who have such a keen sense of how to deal with players, their approach, their training, their motivation.

Bayern host Celtic in the Champions League on Wednesday evening and then travel to Hamburg next weekend.
