Jenson Button: I feel Lewis Hamilton is going to win the world championship

JENSON BUTTON has tipped Lewis Hamilton to retain his Formula One title – despite seeing a resurgent Nico Rosberg win the last two races.

The German’s victories in Belgium and Italy reduced Hamilton’s lead in the championship to just two points.

But Hamilton, who was hit with a grid penalty at Spa and suffered a dodgy start in Monza, usually has a stronger second half to the season.

And 2009 champ and former McLaren teammate Button says the 31-year-old, who overturned a 43 point deficit earlier this season, is the stronger driver.

He said: “I personally feel that Lewis is going to win the world championship.

“He’s come from such a long way back, I think everyone forgets how far he was behind Rosberg and he closed that gap over three races.

“For me, Lewis – when the car’s working for him – the results are a lot more consistent. His qualifying’s impressive, and I think in a race you know he’s in a very strong position.

“Mentally he’s a lot stronger than he used to be, he’s got a really good chance and he probably is going to win a fourth world title.”

Hamilton is looking to get back to winning ways this weekend in Singapore where last year his car struggled for pace before being forced to retire when a £1 part on his £300million Merc snapped.

He added: “Monza didn’t quite go to plan. But when you look at how far we’ve come as a team this season, from the position we were in, then I realise I’m in a phenomenal position.

“Next up it is Singapore, which is always a great event. We didn’t have the greatest weekend there last year, so hopefully we’re on top of that now.”
