Javier Mascherano signs new three-year deal with Barcelona to end speculation he was Paul Pogba’s replacement at Juventus

JAVIER MASCHERANO has signed a new three-year deal at Barcelona, ending speculation of a switch to replace Paul Pogba at Juventus.

The former West Ham and Liverpool utility man, 32, has committed his future to the Spanish champions with a contract extension which was revealed as Andre Gomes was unveiled at the Nou Camp.

Mascherano was a target for Juventus who are desperately looking for a midfield general to replace Pogba should he complete his £105million switch to Manchester United.

Barca director Albert Soler said: “An agreement has been reached and Javier Mascherano will continue at Barcelona for the next three years.”

There had been a fear amongst club chiefs that a big offer from Juve would be tempting to the Argentine and boss Luis Enrique had been public in his desire for him to stay.

He said on returning to training this week: “I’d take this opportunity to say that I hope Mascherano renews soon.

“He’s a vital player for us. There’s a negotiation with him and I know this will be the case. He’s key.”

Barca are currently in the UK training at England’s St George’s Park, where Roy Keane was earlier spotted watching the players from the stands.

The Catalonians are preparing for the International Champions Cup with Celtic and Liverpool making up the rest of the friendly competition starting this weekend.
