Henningsvær Stadion in Norway: Rugged islet between mountains might just be the most beautiful venue in the world to play football

NOBODY dreamed football could be this pure.

A rugged islet in Norway, surrounded by mountains, rugged countryside and the open sea, might just be the most beautiful setting for the beautiful game.

The Henningsvær Idrettslag Stadion is in a tiny fishing village on Hellandsøya island off Lotofen, home to some of Europe’s most untamed landscape.

But it is a venue few have experienced.

The village of Henningsvær only has about 500 inhabitants and the artifical pitch is mainly used by amateur club Henningsvær IL to train kids.

In fact, “stadion” is perhaps too extravagant a term for a venue with no stands and just a strip of asphalt around it for spectators and parked cars.

Players, though, cannot help but notice the wild summits – and the dozens of racks put up for drying cod.

The scenery gets a different perspective at night as floodlights from the pitch cast a hint of a shadow across the mountains.
