But Redknapp now denies they had a flutter and says he only went along with an undercover reporter’s accusations because he “just wanted to get home”.
Bribery allegations cost Sam Allardyce his job as England boss but Redknapp, 69, does not believe the sting has sent shockwaves through the game.
He claimed: “I don’t think there’s widespread corruption.
“Sam Allardyce made a mistake and paid the price but what else has there been? People have got carried away by claiming football has to clean up its act.

On his brush with hidden recordings Redknapp added: “This guy told me he knew a few of the lads had a bet on a game.
“I just replied, ‘They had all had a bet’ but I wasn’t even listening. I’d been there for three hours and just wanted to get home.
“I went along with what this guy was saying — which of course I shouldn’t have done — but if it really was true, where’s the evidence? There would be a bet receipt. It was a load of cobblers.”
