And Dier backed his Three Lions and Spurs pal to shine in the role.

The 24-year-old said: “It is going to be a really special tournament for him.

“He has all the attributes you need to be a good captain — the way he carries himself, the way he works, the way he trains, the way you see him in games.

“Just being himself, that is a quality in itself. I’m very happy for Harry to be given the opportunity — it’s fully deserved.”

England team-mate Gary Cahill added: “Harry has captained Tottenham many times.

“He is going to be a mainstay with England for many years you would feel. He is a world-class player.

“In terms of leadership, he has that off the pitch.

“He voices his opinion when he needs to and is good for the boys. It was a decision I could see coming.”

Dier has also captained England under Southgate and vowed to carry on being vocal, despite not getting the armband.

He added: “It would be unfair on Harry or the manager that they should have to take all the responsibility.

“Everyone has to take ownership.”

Dier also dismissed fears England are too young to succeed. He added: “I don’t pay too much attention to that.

“It is all about your mentality and attitude and the way you approach things.”
