Hamburg sack chairman Heribert Bruchhagen AND sporting director Jens Todt in preparation for life outside Bundesliga

HAMBURG have sacked their chairman and sporting director as they prepare for life outside the Bundesliga.

Chairman Heribert Bruchhagen and sporting chief Jens Todt have both been axed with the club languishing second from bottom in the table.

Hamburg are facing the prospect of relegation from the top flight for the first time – the last of the Bundesliga’s founding clubs ever to drop down.

And new club president Bernd Hoffmann has wasted little time since his election in starting to trim down the structure behind the scenes.

Hoffman said: “We decided on this step after detailed analysis of the whole situation and are devoting ourselves to the new direction.”

Hoffmann has also taken over the chairmanship of the supervisory board, with deputy chairman Frank Wettsetein tasked with standing in for Bruchhagen.

In what the club called a “realignment”, Todt was dumped from his job which included all contract negotiations with players and coaching staff.

Those duties will now be picked up by various members of the remaining staff, as Hamburg trim their wage bill to reflect the expected loss of earnings

The club travel to Bayern Munich this weekend knowing they desperately need to pull off a shock win to ignite realistic hope of avoiding the drop.

They could potentially find themselves ten points off Mainz and Wolfsburg, the only two sides Hamburg have any real hope of catching.

But their hopes of snatching three points against the runaway leaders look slim given their struggles to find the net this season.

Hamburg are the lowest scorers in the Bundesliga, having hit the net just 18 times in 25 matches so far.

Even bottom club Cologne have scored six more goals, and with Bayern boasting by far the best defensive record in the country the chances of a win look remote.
