But for Bale, born in the Welsh capital, it would be that little bit sweeter as he can celebrate with family and friends so nearby.

Here are the other five others who enjoyed the most familiar of victories.

After winning the inaugural European Cup in Paris, Real Madrid retained their trophy in front of their home fans at the Bernabeu.

Los Blancos beat Fiorentina 2-0 with goals from Alfredo Di Stefano and Francisco Gento.

Munoz would manage Los Blancos to two further victories — in 1960 and 1966.

Alex Stepney, Manchester United — London: 1968

United became England’s first European champions when they beat Benfica 4-1 after extra-time.

Sir Bobby Charlton was the hero as the skipper scored two, while George Best hit a sublime second and Brian Kidd got in on the act on his 19th birthday.

But London-born goalkeeper Stepney was able to enjoy the success at Wembley.

Angelo Di Livio, Juventus — Rome: 1996

Marcello Lippi led the Bianconeri to success over Louis van Gaal’s Ajax after a tense penalty shoot-out.

Despite boasting 13 Italian players in their squad, only Di Livio was born in Rome.

The midfielder replaced Paulo Sousa midway through the second half at the Stadio Olimpico.

Nicolas Anelka, Real Madrid — France: 2000

Many questioned Anelka’s big-money move from Arsenal to Real Madrid — but it instantly paid dividends.

The Frenchman was the hero in Champions League semi-final triumph over Bayern Munich.

And, despite not scoring, started at the famous Stade de France, as goals from Fernando Morientes, Steve McManaman and Raul swept Valencia aside.
