FORMER England cricket captain David Gower sent Twitter into meltdown after licking his fingers after handling raw chicken on Sunday Brunch.

The now Sky Sports presenter, 59, was appearing on the Channel 4 cookery show when the ‘shocking’ incident took place.

Gower – a 117-time capped Test player – was helping host Simon Rimmer prepare a dish on the live show, when he was asked to marinate the chicken.

However, immediately after doing so, he proceeded to lick his fingers before washing them, sending stomachs churning across the country.

Fans of the Sunday Brunch immediately took to Twitter to suggest Gower may be sick… if they didn’t beat him to it.

One viewer tweeted: “I’m hardly the poster girl for hygiene, but I feel nauseous witnessing David Gower licking his raw chicken fingers. Eww.”

Another quipped said: “Eeee! Salmonella here we come, David Gower licking fingers after touching raw chicken on #SundayBrunch. Finger licking good, not.”

A third joked: “Someone should probably get David Gower a bucket and family size packet of toilet roll in the next 12 minutes… #SundayBrunch.”

Meanwhile, another fan of the show added: “My boyfriend is having a minor meltdown over David Gower licking his raw chicken fingers on #Sunday Brunch. @SundayBruchC4 is he OK?!”

One Twitter user simply wrote: “STOP LICKING FINGERS PLEASE DAVID.”

Another even pre-empted the situation, saying: “RIP David Gower”.

While a final user was horrified, saying: “David Gower has just licked his fingers after handling raw chicken!!! Mate….noooo!!”

Gower racked up a whopping 8,231 runs in his Test career for England, averaging an impressive 44.25 with the bat, with a top score of 215.

Yet the England man wasn’t the only problem on the live show, as chef Marianna Lumb went on to slice her finger on a mandoline, with a social media user succinctly summing up the show, dubbing it a ‘nightmare’.

They wrote: “Use a flipping mandolin guard… this #sundaybrunch is a H&S nightmare.. fingerlicking raw chicken… and now sliced digits.”
