Foreign Office causes uproar amongst football fans after likening them to drunken yobs in comparison to rugby fans

FOREIGN Office staff have angered football fans by suggesting they are drunken yobs — in advice issued to rugby supporters.

In a note to rugby fans heading to Rome for next week’s Six Nations clash against Italy they compare the two travelling supporters.

The memo on the Foreign Office website says:”The Consular Services of the British Embassy Rome have advice for English supporters travelling to see the match.

“Traveling rugby fans normally prepare well for their trips, don’t get into fights, don’t overindulge, don’t lose their passports and don’t normally come to our attention. Keep it up!”

One England footie fan who has travelled to Italy to watch the Three Lions said:”Everytime I’ve been to watch football in England it’s the Italians who have caused problems.

“To suggest England travelling supporters cause problems is out of order.

“I’m sure some England rugby fans have got drunk and lost their passport in Rome – rugby fans sink more booze than footie fans.”

Last night a Foreign Office source said: “I can see why the choice of words would cause offence to football fans. It’s not the best worded advice we have given.”
