Everton boss Ronald Koeman says Ireland’s James McCarthy ‘needs to take responsibility’ over injury after being ruled out of Merseyside derby
EVERTON manager Ronald Koeman believes that Irish international James McCarthy needs to accept responsibility for his latest injury.
In a prepared statement during a live press conference today, the boss said he was “disappointed but not surprised… about the McCarthy-Ireland situation” and expressed his anger over the 26-year-old’s decision to declare himself fit for an international against Wales last Friday.

“Of course I expected this question about James… when asked to play he said he felt he was fit. I spoke to [him], he needs to take responsibility.
“He had only two days training for Ireland and broke down in the warm up.
“In my opinion he would need at least one full week of training with the team to be declared fit.”
McCarthy has been dogged by injury problems in the past three seasons and was recovering from a hamstring problem heading into the international break.

The Everton midfielder is out of the Merseyside derby with Liverpool tomorrow due to a hamstring injury that he picked up in the warm-up of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier with Wales.
Koeman added: “The assessment of the Ireland medical team [was] that it would be high risk for James to play. In my opinion the Ireland manager in this instance was not protecting the player.”
Finishing his prepared statement, Koeman refused to speak further on the matter, saying it was an issue between O’Neill and Everton FC itself.
