Following his latest knock, Butland tweeted: “Bit of luck wouldn’t go a miss, but can’t keep me down for long! Be back soon.”

The Potters ace was sidelined for 13 months when he fractured his ankle during a friendly win against Germany in March 2016.

The news will be an even more bitter pill to swallow for Butland – who was expected to start Friday night’s game against Germany.

Gareth Southgate is now expected to pick Everton No1 Jordan Pickford over struggling West Ham stopper Joe Hart at Wembley.

Butland’s withdrawal for the friendlies against Germany and Brazil is the latest in a long line for the Three Lions.

Harry Kane, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph and Harry Winks have all pulled out of the squad through injury.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is expected to start the game at Wembley, with Pickford another potential debutant.

On his somewhat surprise inclusion, Burnley ace Cork – who has represented England at every level from Under-16 to Under-21 and also represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics claimed: “I’m really, really happy.

“We’ve had a good start to the season and you’re probably not going to get many better opportunities to be in the England squad, because we are doing so well.”
