GARETH SOUTHGATE has addressed Raheem Sterling’s controversial gun tattoo.
The England boss, preparing for tomorrow’s World Cup warm-up with Nigeria, said he had spoken to the Manchester City star about the riffle tattoo on the forward’s right leg.

Southgate said: “Raheem is a very strong character so is focused on his football. I have had a good deep conversation with him to see how he was. He knows he has got our support.
“He understands how some people have perceived the tattoo. In my view, a tattoo is like any work of art the intent is with the individual, the person.
“What is clear from his statement and experience is that he is not someone who wants to support or promote guns.
“He is a very strong individual and I looking forward to the game.

“His story is remarkable. People highlight the faults of the squad but for so many of them it is incredible they have got to this point.
“It is a great example of young kids and what you can achieve if you are focused. They have talent but so much more is needed. Raheem embodies that. Nothing is given to you.

“I enjoy working with him and he has a lovely sense of humour. He is gaining confidence to come and speak to you. People have seen the real person and a bit more character.
“I talk to all the players at length, it is important as an international manager you don’t have as much time. It is important to understand motivation, thoughts and feelings.”
