Eddie Jones advises England football manager Gareth Southgate to ditch flash cars, fear of failure and get players out of their comfort zone

  • Too concerned with buying flash cars and posh houses.
  • Shackled by a fear of failure and general apathy.
  • Reluctant to step out of their comfort zone in training.

Aussie Jones has transformed our rugby team since taking charge 22 months ago and spoke to England’s football squad in March.

He said: “In England, there’s a fear of failure, a fear of not doing what everyone else is doing.

“Players like to get comfortable, have a nice house, drive a Range Rover, do the same thing every day in training.

“To get them to have the courage to try to be different is the biggest trick. Don’t be comfortable, be uncomfortable.

“As an Australian listening to the English talk football, it’s almost like everyone is saying, ‘We’re gonna fail, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if we qualify, we’re gonna fail, so who really cares?’

“It becomes a self- fulfilling prophecy. They have got to try to break that in some way.”

Southgate’s footballers are odds-on to qualify for next year’s World Cup finals in Russia.

The last two tournaments, in South Africa and Brazil, have been disastrous.

But Jones, speaking at SoccerEx in Manchester, added: “Gareth is a very positive coach and you can see he’s trying to change things.”
