Maradona — who was travelling with his girlfriend Rocio Oliva — arrived at Ezeiza airport in the Argentinian capital city at 9:15pm and attempted to check in.

It is reported he was then was met with the message: “Sir, your passport has been reported stolen. You cannot travel.”

Incredulous, the two-time most expensive player in the world called his agent in an attempt to find an explanation — and was assured there was no charge and he would be allowed to leave the country.

However, this turned out not to be the case and he was ordered to take his luggage and return home.

Maradona — who recently had a facelift —   insists he is innocent and has been set up by a politician.

Speaking to Diario Popular, he was unable to hide his anger, saying: “I will not let anyone control my life.

“For 15 years I have been doing what I want and no one will tell me what I have to do.

“It is a joke that the passport I have in my hand has been reported stolen.

“My lawyer, Matias Morla, will investigate this lie orchestrated by some politician.

“Matias is my shadow and will find those responsible for this barbaric act.”

The Argentina idol’s lawyer insisted he would try to work out who was behind this and why.

Morla added: “We have never reported losing the passport, because Diego had it in his hands.

“What happened at Ezeiza was very strange — especially because it’s not the first time that Maradona has travelled to that country.

“We will investigate to find out what happened and, above all, who took the time to report something when nothing had been lost.”
